I Realized I Had Friends, But Nobody I Could Call

I Realized I Had Friends, But Nobody I Could Call

A few weeks ago, I had a really bad day.

Nothing dramatic happened.

I was just tired, stressed about money, frustrated with work, and honestly feeling a little lost.

I picked up my phone because I wanted to talk to someone.

Then something strange happened.

I started scrolling through my contacts.

Hundreds of names.

People from work.

Old classmates.

People I used to hang out with.

People whose birthdays I know because Facebook reminds me.

People who like my photos and occasionally reply to my stories.

And yet I couldn’t decide who to call.

That feeling stayed with me.

How can you know so many people and still feel like you don’t have anyone to talk to?

I started thinking about my friendships.

Most of them hadn’t ended because of an argument.

Nothing happened.

Life just happened.

Someone got married.

Someone moved.

Someone had children.

Someone became busy with work.

And slowly, without noticing it, “we should get together sometime” became the entire friendship.

I realized I had spent years building a network of people while accidentally losing some of my actual relationships.

So I called an old friend.

We hadn’t properly talked in almost two years.

The conversation lasted more than an hour.

We laughed about stupid things we did years ago. We talked about our families, work, money and how quickly life seems to be moving.

Before hanging up, he said something that surprised me.

“Man, I needed this.”

Apparently, I wasn’t the only one.

Maybe adulthood isn’t always about losing friends.

Sometimes we just stop calling each other because everyone assumes the other person is busy.

So if someone came into your mind while reading this, maybe don’t send them a like.

Call them.
