Bosnia and Herzegovina Presidency launches renovation of auxiliary building in historic Konak complex in Sarajevo

The Service for Joint Tasks of Bosnia and Herzegovina’s institutions announced on November 4, 2026 that it has issued an open‑procedure tender for the renovation of the auxiliary building within the Konak residential complex in Sarajevo. The contract, valued at 222,222 convertible marks (KM) before VAT, will be concluded as a 12‑month framework agreement with the selected bidder, who must provide both a bid guarantee and a performance guarantee.

Konak, situated on Bistrica Street, is one of the city’s most iconic historic sites. Constructed at the end of Ottoman rule, the complex originally served as the residence of the Ottoman valija (governor). After the Ottoman era it continued to function as a residential area up to the outbreak of the 1992 war. Post‑war, the buildings have been largely unused, although the complex remains the property of the Presidency of Bosnia and Herzegovina.

The renovation initiative traces back to Denis Bećirović, a member of the Presidency, who first raised the issue in December 2024. In a statement issued by Bećirović’s office at the end of that year, the Presidency confirmed that some restoration work had already been carried out on the main Konak building during 2025, but a comprehensive project covering the entire complex – including the auxiliary structure and the surrounding park – had not yet been implemented.

The current plan calls for a detailed project that will address the repair, conservation, and adaptation of the auxiliary building, as well as the preparation of necessary permits for the main Konak building and its external landscaping. The horticultural design for the park adjacent to the auxiliary structure is to be prepared by the Institute for the Protection of Monuments of the Sarajevo Canton. According to the Presidency, the restored park will later serve protocol and official functions.

In the 2026 procurement calendar of the Service for Joint Tasks, the renovation of the auxiliary building and the external arrangement of the Konak complex are listed as priority items. However, the tender for the actual renovation works has not yet been published, indicating that the upcoming months will likely see further announcements as the bidding process moves forward.

If completed, the project would revitalize a key cultural monument in Sarajevo, improve the usability of the surrounding public space, and signal the Presidency’s commitment to preserving Bosnia and Herzegovina’s Ottoman heritage.

The tender details are publicly available on the e‑Procurement portal (e‑Nabavke), where interested contractors can submit their proposals in accordance with the stipulated guarantee requirements.
