Sarajevo SDA Leader Faruk Kapidžić Sets Timeline for New Cantonal Government and Calls for Water Infrastructure Action

Sarajevo SDA Leader Faruk Kapidžić Sets Timeline for New Cantonal Government and Calls for Water Infrastructure Action

Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina – Faruk Kapidžić, the president of the Sarajevo cantonal board of the Party of Democratic Action (SDA), said on November 5, 2026, that the formation of a new cantonal government is slated for the beginning or middle of December. In an interview with the morning program of BHRT, Kapidžić indicated that the process could be completed within roughly ten days, provided that all preparatory steps are taken before the first constitutive session of the new cabinet.

Kapidžić, who is the leading candidate to become the new prime minister of Sarajevo Canton, stressed that the selection of ministers will be based on professional expertise, competence and personal integrity. He warned that the upcoming period will be challenging and that officials will be required to work intensively, “almost 24 hours a day,” to address the complex problems the canton faces.

One of the most pressing issues, according to Kapidžić, is the water‑supply system. He pointed out that there are already ready‑made solutions that have never been implemented. These solutions, financed through a credit line, could increase the water supply to Sarajevo within two to three years. Kapidžić criticized the current reliance on the Bačevo reservoir, noting that its capacity is limited, water losses are high, and illegal connections exacerbate the shortage.

The interview also turned to a recent public exchange with Nermin Nikšić, leader of the Social Democratic Party (SDP). Nikšić had previously warned that parties receiving SDP support for the formation of a Federal Government of Bosnia and Herzegovina should publicly say “sorry, traitors.” When asked whether he would apologize to Nikšić, Kapidžić replied that he does not see any reason to do so. He argued that the SDP leader’s demands are unfounded and that the focus should instead be on whether Fadil Novalić – former prime minister of the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina – would apologize first. Kapidžić said, “There is no theory that I will apologize to Nikšić; the first apology should come from Novalić.”

Kapidžić also dismissed the notion that he would be forced to stay in opposition, emphasizing his willingness to serve in any capacity required to stabilize the canton. He reiterated that the SDA will push for a cabinet capable of handling the “heavy period” ahead, and that any appointed officials must be ready to work round‑the‑clock to improve the current situation.

The statements come as Sarajevo continues to grapple with infrastructure deficits, particularly in water provision, and as political negotiations for both cantonal and federal level governments remain delicate. Kapidžić’s remarks signal a push for a swift government formation, a clear stance on political accountability, and an urgent call for the activation of previously approved water‑supply projects.

If the timeline holds, the new Sarajevo cantonal cabinet could be operational by mid‑December, potentially reshaping the political landscape in the capital and influencing broader inter‑entity dynamics in Bosnia and Herzegovina.
