Serbian President Vučić Joins Informer’s Post‑Ban Party Amid Election Fallout

Serbian President Vučić Joins Informer’s Post‑Ban Party Amid Election Fallout

Belgrade – Former Serbian president Aleksandar Vučić was spotted last night at the Savanova restaurant, popularly known as “Ćaci bar,” taking part in an informal get‑together organized by Dragan J. Vučićević, the chief editor of the tabloid Informer. Vučić posted a short video of himself on Instagram, showing him singing and mingling with Informer staff and supporters before pausing with a solemn look, as if recalling the recent election results.

The gathering took place two days after the Council of the Regulatory Body for Electronic Media (REM) unanimously voted to ban Informer’s television program “Prve Info” and related shows for seven days. REM judged the ban necessary because a presenter had expressed political opinions during the election campaign, which the council deemed a “particularly serious breach of the law.”

Vučić’s appearance has been framed by the outlet as a “dernek” – a colloquial term for a party – that he was invited to. Observers note that his presence, combined with the serious tone he adopted mid‑video, suggested a shift from the celebratory atmosphere to a reminder of the recent political defeat.

The political backdrop is significant. On 27 September, Vučić formally resigned as president of Serbia, paving the way for the ruling Serbian Progressive Party (SNS) to contest the snap parliamentary elections held on 25 October. The elections resulted in a victory for the Studentska lista, ending the SNS’s 14‑year tenure in government. Vučić publicly acknowledged the loss, stating, “Based on the sample it is clear that we lost these elections.”

Following the defeat, Ana Brnabić assumed the duties of acting president until new presidential elections are scheduled. The SNS, now in opposition, secured 103 seats in the 250‑member National Assembly, while the Studentska lista obtained 140 seats, with two Bosniak representatives also entering parliament.

Vučić’s attendance at the Informer event has drawn mixed reactions. Supporters see it as a show of solidarity with a media outlet that faces state sanctions, while critics argue that his presence underscores a disconnect between the political elite and the public mood after a historic loss. The abrupt shift in his demeanor during the Instagram clip – from jovial singing to a blank stare – was widely interpreted as a moment of reflection on the election outcome.

The incident highlights the intertwining of media, politics, and public perception in Serbia’s evolving democratic landscape. As the country transitions to a new parliamentary majority and prepares for upcoming presidential elections, Vučić’s movements remain closely watched, both domestically and abroad.
