Turkcell, Turkey’s leading telecommunications company, is presenting its digital and green transition vision at COP31. Dr. Ali Taha Koç, the General Director of Turkcell, stated that the company is continuing to build its digital infrastructure with a “more bits, less watt” approach. This strategy focuses on maintaining data growth while optimizing energy efficiency through cleaner energy sources and smarter production methods.

The company has reached an active renewable energy capacity of 115.453 MW. Currently, more than 2,400 base station sites utilize solar energy. Turkcell has certified its entire electricity consumption, including data centers, with renewable energy certificates, aiming to increase its total renewable installed capacity to 300 MW by the end of 2026.

Efficiency improvements have been substantial. In 2025, the group reduced energy consumption per unit of data traffic by approximately 23 percent and lowered total energy consumption by 7.3 percent. Smart sleep modes in its 5G network have achieved an 85 percent savings in energy consumption per gigabyte. Additionally, Turkcell is the only company in the Turkish telecommunications and technology sector with greenhouse gas reduction targets approved by the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi). It also received an A rating in the CDP Supplier Engagement assessment, confirming its performance in sustainable supply chain management.

To support this transformation, Turkcell issued a $500 million sustainable bond in 2025. At COP31, the company is participating in sessions to discuss the role of digital infrastructure in the global shift toward clean energy. The conference targets increasing electricity’s share of global energy consumption to 35 percent by 2035. Turkcell is also promoting social impact projects such as ‘Eğitime Dönüştür’, ‘Zekâ Gücü’, ‘Geleceği Yazanlar’, and ‘Dijital Bahar’, which focus on environmental awareness and digital literacy across different age groups.
