Hadith of the Day: The Daily Descent of Two Angels

Hadith of the Day: The Daily Descent of Two Angels

Every morning, as the sun rises and the day begins, a profound spiritual reality unfolds. According to a verified authentic (Sahih) hadith, two angels descend to the earth each day to intercede on behalf of humanity. This tradition is recorded in Sahih al-Bukhari, Hadith number 1442, and is also agreed upon by other major collections, confirming its high authenticity grade. The narration is reported by Abu Hurairah, may Allah be pleased with him, who conveyed the words of the Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him.

The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, stated: “There is no day in which the servants awake but that two angels descend. One of them says: ‘O Allah, grant a replacement to the one who spends,’ and the other says: ‘O Allah, destroy the wealth of the one who withholds.'”

This hadith highlights the divine balance between generosity and miserliness. The first angel prays for those who spend their wealth in obedience to Allah, supporting their families, hosting guests, and performing voluntary good deeds. The prayer asks for a replacement, meaning that what is given away is compensated by Allah, often with something better. This aligns with the Quranic promise in Surah As-Saba (34:39) that Allah is the best Provider and will replace what is given in His path.

Conversely, the second angel prays for the destruction of the wealth of those who are stingy. However, scholars clarify that this warning specifically applies to those who withhold obligatory expenses, such as Zakat or the rights of dependents, rather than those who simply choose not to give voluntary charity. Being miserly and greedy is strictly prohibited in Islam. This daily reminder serves as a powerful motivation for believers to cultivate generosity, understanding that every act of giving is observed and rewarded by the Divine, while stinginess in fulfilling religious obligations carries spiritual and material consequences.
