Kosovo’s Trade Gap Widens as Imports Top €6.3 billion in First Ten Months of 2026
The Kosovo customs administration released figures for the January‑October 2026 period that show a sharp increase in both imports and exports, but a deepening trade deficit. Total imports rose to more than €6.3 billion, an 8.5 percent jump from the €5.81 billion recorded for the same period in 2025. Exports grew even faster, reaching €960 million – a 23.9 percent rise over the €774.8 million logged a year earlier.
The widening gap means the trade deficit for the ten‑month span reached €5.34 billion, up from €5.04 billion in 2025. Monthly data indicate that July was the peak import month with €716.7 million, followed by October (€694.9 million) and June (€676.3 million). Export activity peaked in October, when Kosovo shipped €124.2 million abroad, compared with €91.8 million in the same month of the previous year.
China remained the dominant source of imports, supplying goods worth €879.4 million, overtaking Germany, which fell to the second position with €838.6 million. Turkey ranked third at €740.3 million. Other notable suppliers included Italy (€354.9 million), North Macedonia (€314.4 million), Greece (€309.5 million), Poland (€242.1 million), the United States (€240.9 million), Albania (€225.2 million) and Serbia (€195.3 million).
On the export side, Kosovo’s trade continues to be focused on regional markets. Albania was the top destination, importing €182 million of Kosovar goods, up from €130.7 million a year earlier. North Macedonia followed with €148.6 million, Germany with €94.4 million and Switzerland with €92.2 million. Serbia received €61.4 million, Montenegro €50.6 million, Turkey €36.4 million, Italy €31.4 million, the Netherlands €28.3 million and Bulgaria €21.8 million.
Together, Albania and North Macedonia account for roughly 34.4 percent of Kosovo’s export value, while China, Germany and Turkey together represent about 39 percent of its imports. The data underline Kosovo’s continued reliance on foreign goods despite a notable uptick in export performance.
These figures come as Kosovo recorded its highest ever annual import total of €7.11 billion for the full year 2025, suggesting that the upward trend may persist into 2026. The customs authority did not provide a forecast for the remaining two months of the year.
