It is easy to look religious when everything is going well.

It is easy to smile in the mosque.

It is easy to share a beautiful Qur’an verse.

It is easy to speak about patience, mercy and good character.

But I think the real test often begins when another human being becomes difficult.

How do we speak to our spouse when we are angry?

How do we treat our parents when they repeat the same story for the tenth time?

How do we respond to someone who cannot do anything for us?

How do we treat a waiter, a cleaner, an employee or a stranger?

And perhaps most importantly:

How do we behave toward someone we simply don’t like?

The Qur’an does something remarkable when speaking about worship. It connects our relationship with Allah with our treatment of parents, relatives, orphans, the poor, neighbours and travellers.

That should make us think.

Because Islam was never meant to make us religious only inside the mosque.

It should make us better outside of it.

A person can know many verses and still hurt people with their tongue.

A person can attend every Islamic program and still be unbearable inside their own home.

A person can speak beautifully about mercy while refusing to forgive the smallest mistake.

Knowledge matters.

Prayer matters.

Worship matters.

But one of the fruits of worship should be character.

Maybe before asking how religious someone looks, we should ask a different question:

Do people feel safe, respected and valued around them?

Because sometimes the most powerful Islamic reminder isn’t something we say.

It’s the way we treat another human being when nobody is watching.
