Tears Flow as Afyonkarahisar Attack Victims Laid to Rest

AFYONKARAHİSAR, Turkey – A series of funeral services held over the weekend marked the final farewell to eight victims of a gun attack that shocked the nation on November 6, 2026. The assault, carried out by a man identified as Arif Sefa Özdemir with a pump‑action shotgun, left a science teacher, a religious‑education teacher, a married couple, and three men from Kırşehir dead.

Science teacher Ayşe Sena Demir, 46, who taught at Yukarıtandır Village Middle School, was laid to rest after a funeral service at Muratpaşa Mosque in Antalya. Her father, Ahmet Demir, and mother, Hayrünnisa Demir, wept openly as the Imam, Aydın Yığman, prayed, stating, “We have witnessed the loss of humanity and the cruelty inflicted on innocent people. May Allah grant them the rank of martyr.” Demir’s coffin was subsequently buried in the Kurşunlu Cemetery.

Religious‑education teacher Hilal Mete’s body was retrieved from the Afyonkarahisar State Hospital morgue and taken to Paşa Mosque in the city centre. After the noon prayer, family members gathered around the coffin, shedding tears before the burial at Bayraktepe Cemetery.

The attack also claimed the lives of three men from Kırşehir – Ahmet Uzel, Bekir Toprak and Numan Toprak – who were killed with the same weapon. Their funeral took place at Kümbetaltı Mosque, followed by interment at Kümbetaltı Cemetery. The ceremony was attended by the district governor, Kaymakam Koray Yanıktepe, Deputy Governor Lütfullah Göktaş, and a large crowd of citizens.

Elderly couple Seydi Ahmet Aydoğmuş (73) and his wife Satı Aydoğmuş (69) were taken from the hospital morgue to Kıyır village, where a Friday‑time service was held at the local mosque before they were buried in the village cemetery. Local officials, including the Kaymakam and the Vice Governor, were present to offer condolences.

The final victim, İsmail Şen, was transported to Olukpınar village in the İscehisar district. After the Friday prayer, his funeral procession concluded with burial in the village cemetery.

The funerals, described by witnesses as a “flood of tears,” highlighted the deep sorrow felt across multiple communities. Authorities continue to search for Özdemir, who remains at large. The incident has reignited calls for stricter security measures and support for the families of the deceased.
