UAE‑Funded Mass Wedding Unites 250 Couples Amid Gaza’s Rubble

UAE‑Funded Mass Wedding Unites 250 Couples Amid Gaza’s Rubble

A crowd of more than 11,000 people gathered on the shoreline of Gaza City for a mass wedding ceremony that saw 250 Palestinian couples exchange vows on Friday. The event, held at the Sea Club on the Gaza coast, was financed by the United Arab Emirates and organized by the committee supporting the Emirati humanitarian mission “Al‑Farish Al‑Shahm 3,” in cooperation with the Saqr bin Mohammed Al Qasimi Foundation.

The ceremony, titled “Haljina radosti 3,” featured a parade of dozens of cars adorned with Palestinian flags and flowers, winding along the beach past ruined buildings and the tents that shelter displaced families. Grooms wore suits while brides appeared in white dresses embroidered with traditional Palestinian motifs. Palestinian and Emirati anthems were played during the proceedings.

According to the organizers, 11,622 individuals applied to take part. After a screening process, 1,335 applicants entered a final draw, from which the 250 couples were selected. Many of the newlyweds have suffered personal losses in the ongoing conflict; one groom, Munir al‑Tatari, lost his mother and other family members in the war and saw his family home destroyed. Another groom, Saed al‑Najjar, also described his house as having been leveled by bombardment, adding that the wedding marks a “new beginning.”

The UAE’s involvement marks its third large‑scale wedding initiative in Gaza. In December 2025, a similar ceremony in Khan Younis joined 54 couples, and in April 2026, 300 couples were married in Deir al‑Balah. The “Al‑Farish Al‑Shahm” operation was launched in November 2023 and has been described by PressTV as an effort to provide both material assistance and symbolic support to a population living under siege.

Observers noted the juxtaposition of celebration against a backdrop of destruction: the sea‑side venue was flanked by bomb‑shattered structures and rows of temporary shelters for the displaced. Yet participants and organizers emphasized resilience. “We are a people who love to celebrate despite the destructions,” a spokesperson told PressTV, echoing the sentiment expressed by many of the couples.

The mass wedding underscores how humanitarian actors are blending aid with cultural and social events to reinforce community cohesion in Gaza. While the ceremony offered a moment of joy, it also highlighted the broader humanitarian challenges that continue to afflict the enclave, where many families still lack permanent housing and basic services.
